When I started diving in 2013, I was in my late 30s, but I already had a solid background as a filmmaker and producer, mainly in the field of TV commercials and feature documentaries. While I was already fascinated by the beauty and complexity of the underwater world, as a filmmaker I must admit that my first attempts to capture its magic were extremely frustrating. First, there are the challenges due to the laws of physics in water such as light refraction, color absorption or simply the very nature of the environment that made me realize that the techniques I had mastered on land could not really help me below the surface. Then I was taking my first "steps" in the water, so I was not what you would call a seasoned diver. Finally, at that time, access to high-end underwater photography equipment was truly reserved for an elite.
But I was determined, so I rebuilt my approach from scratch. Starting in 2017, I started experimenting with a GoPro, much like everyone else I guess. Although the results were quite encouraging, they did not allow for professional use of the images I captured. So I invested in a Nauticam underwater housing and a Canon 1 DX Mark II while improving my skills as a diver. With time, experience and the talent of my friend and post-production master Franck Meyer, I managed to set up a workflow of my own and obtain results that met my expectations. By combining our skills, we finally found the key to producing BBC-quality underwater footage with mid-range equipment. The rest of the story is a mixture of a lot of work and a bit of luck: we went to the most beautiful diving destinations, made mini-series dedicated to the protection of the marine world like "Blue Paradises" which were spotted by international film festivals and then won many awards.
The countless hours of underwater footage we have produced in our planet's oceans and seas is now used by many of the world's most renowned entertainment industry players, including Netflix, BBC, Arte, Discovery Channel and many more. We also collaborate with many international tourist offices that wish to promote their underwater heritage.
